Get The Most Out of Your Fridge With These Simple Maintenance Tips

Your refrigerator is a big investment. Take care of it properly. With these simple tips, you should be able to get 15 to 17 years of life from your refrigerator.

Clean the Condenser Coils

One of the most overlooked items of refrigerator maintenance is cleaning the condenser coils. Your refrigerator’s condenser coils dissipate the heat that is generated by the unit. When air travels over the refrigerant filled coils, it is cooled and sent off into the room. When your condenser coils are covered by dirt, dust, or any other debris, they aren’t able to do their job. This can not only result in a lack of efficiency and higher energy bills but can also result in a breakdown of your unit.

First, unplug your refrigerator or turn it off at the breaker box. If your coils are at the back of your unit, slide your refrigerator out carefully. Coils can also be found at the bottom of the unit or at the top. Remove any panel cover. These will usually simply lift off. Clean out the dust and debris with the help of a long extension on your vacuum and a long-handled brush. Replace any panels, slide the refrigerator back into place, and replug the unit. You should clean your coils every six months.

Clean the Drip Pan

Some refrigerators have a drip pan. This catches any condensation from the unit. The drip pan can become a nasty mess and harbour germs and bacteria if not cleaned periodically.

The drip pan is typically located behind the kick panel at the front bottom of the refrigerator. Carefully remove the pan and discard the accumulated water. Wash the pan thoroughly and replace it.

Clean the Door Seals

The door seals are the rubber gaskets that are located inside the refrigerator doors to keep them sealed properly. When they get dirty, the doors no longer can keep warm air outside and cold air inside. This causes your refrigerator to work harder to keep the proper temperature and can result in higher energy bills for you. A simple solution of warm water and soap should do the trick although door seals can sometimes become cracked and damaged. When this happens, they should be replaced.

Change Your Water Filter

If your refrigerator has an icemaker or a water dispenser, it will have a filter. Change the filter about every six months to keep your icemaker and dispenser working properly and your water and ice tasting fresh.
